Sony will release a bright ultra-wide-angle lens in May in its G Master series for mirrorless cameras. The 14mm f/1.8 is suitable for full-frame cameras such as the Sony A7 and A9 models. The lens has a suggested retail price of 1600 euros.

The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM lens is 100mm long, 83mm in diameter and weighs 450g. The optical construction consists of 14 lens elements in 11 groups and Sony uses various special elements to ensure high image quality. The lens is sealed against dust and moisture and has a minimum focusing distance of 25 centimeters, measured from the sensor face of the camera.

The ultra-wide-angle lens is part of Sony’s G Master series, in which the manufacturer places its best lenses. Sigma previously released a 14 mm f/1.8 Art lens that is also suitable for Sony’s full-frame cameras. With a length of 126 mm, that lens is a lot larger than the Sony alternative and in particular much heavier; the Sigma alternative weighs 1170 grams.

Sony gives the FE 14 mm f/1.8 GM a suggested retail price of 1600 euros. The suggested retail price of Sigma’s 14 mm f/1.8 Art is the same, but that lens can now be found for a lower amount in the Pricewatch. The new Sony lens will be on sale from May.
