A beta release of PeaZip was released on Tuesday with version number 2.9. This archiving program is available under an open source license and tries to differentiate itself from the competition by specializing in security. Encrypting data is therefore the spearhead of our own pea format. The program can create 7z, bz2, gz, paq/lpaq, pea, quad, tar, upx and zip files and extract various file formats including ace, arj, cab, deb, iso, lha , rar and rpm. The following changes and improvements have been made in this beta release:

  • 118 file extensions supported

File manager

  • Pressing control on drag and drop operation from/to application (while browsing files) allows to chose between archive, browse, extract, copy or move files
  • Navigation bar on the left of the browser
  • Organize menu to: customize browser’s aspect, customize and show/hide application’s bars; select view (none, status bar, details, bookmarks, recent, history, clipboard)
  • New Details view box
  • Status and Details gives information also about selected objects
  • Unified history/recent archives menu, also accessible from a separate icon in address bar
  • Updated icon themes
  • Improved handling of encrypted archives on direct extraction from entries in context menu
