A few days ago, the first update was published for the Kmess version 1.5, which was released at the beginning of this year. Kmess is a Windows Live Messenger client for the Linux platform that integrates seamlessly into KDE. In version 1.5, the emphasis during development was on fast and reliable file transfer. According to the developers, this is a prerequisite for using webcams, a feature that will finally make its appearance in Kmess 2. Other interesting features in Kmess 1.5 include automatic download of avatars, support for custom emoticons, and being able to use the right mouse button for links and emoticons in chat windows. Below is an overview of the most important changes in version 1.5.1:

Added:

  • Checking if a screensaver or fullscreen app is running, and disable notification popups.
  • Option to show contact display pictures in the contact list.
  • Spell checker to the chat window, its option is in the Settings menu.
  • A contact list popup text showing which MSN client your contacts use.
  • A little screenshot of the tray icon area when closing KMess to tray for the first time, to help finding where it is.
  • Ability to manually select the Idle MSN status.
  • A warning message for broken SOCKS implementations which could cause KMess to freeze.

Fixed:

  • Selecting a picture in the Autopackage version, and KDE 3.2 / KDE 3.3 installations.
  • A possible freeze, could only happen in developer builds (–enable-debug-output).
  • Focus of typing area when reactivating the chat window.
  • The chat window title, which could continue blinking after its window had been given focus.
