Nazgul writes, “There has been a minor update to the Java Runtime Environment. The JRE also includes a Java Plugin for a number of browsers, including Internet Explorer, which is more up-to-date than Microsoft’s JVM, as Microsoft has been time has stopped development of the JVM due to a lawsuit won by Sun.

However, very little attention is paid to the release on Sun’s own site.

I came across him by chance on www.download.com, where he is dated 08-01-2002. The search engine on the Sun site dates the release notes to 04-01-2002 and the announcement to 05-01-2002.

Since the release notes is quite a large wall of text, it is not quoted. Usage this one link.”:

The tar.gz can be downloaded here and a special RPM has been set up for redhat.

The JavaTM 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) consists of the Java virtual machine, the Java platform core classes, and supporting files. It is the runtime part of the Java 2 SDK, but without the development tools such as compilers and debuggers.

The JRE is packaged with the JavaTM Plug-in software that enables widely-deployed web browsers to use the Java 2 Runtime Environment to run applets.
