Software Update: Avast Antivirus 5.0.545

After the beta earlier this week, Alwil Software has released a stable version of its antivirus program. In version 5, the old Home and Professional editions have been replaced with Avast Free Antivirus and Avast Pro Antivirus to more clearly indicate which version is free and which is not. In addition, a version called Avast Internet Security is now available, which includes a firewall and anti-spam as extras. In this new release, several sandbox and firewall improvements have been made, version 4.x license keys are now accepted during installation, and many bug fixes have been made. The most important improvements are listed below.

Most notable improvements include:

  • Solved a bug related to submission of false positives
  • Improvements in the Behavior Shield (real-time antirootkit part)
  • Sandbox: many functional, stability and performance improvements
  • Firewall: VPN compatibility fixes (should now work even in Public zone etc)
  • Firewall: solved an issue related to hang and/or crash of the afwServ.exe process
  • Finally works with major screen readers (avast is now blind-friendly)
  • Compatibility improvements in the Web Shield
  • Various fixes in the Outlook antispam add-in
  • Improved detection of droppers
  • Setup program of the Pro AV now also accepts v4.x license keys
  • Right to left support
  • Added Croatian and Arabic language packs
