Snapchat owner Snap shuts down GIFs database Gfycat. The company will remove all data from the platform as of September and from then on GIFs from that domain will no longer work. Snap bought Gfycat last year.

Gfycat has a notification on the home page that confirms the stop. “The Gfycat service is being terminated. Please save or delete your content by logging in. After September 1, all content from Gfycat will be deleted.” It is unclear why Snap is discontinuing Gfycat.

The site has been occasionally difficult to reach for some time and uploads reportedly did not work either. In addition, the site’s TLS certificate expired in May. Snap bought Gfycat after Meta announced it was buying competitor Giphy. Meta has now sold Giphy to Shutterstock at a significant loss. Gfycat existed for about ten years.
