Slack unveils interface redesign

Slack has unveiled a redesign of its office app interface. Many of the usual functions can now be found in a sidebar, making the application clearer. The updated interface will be made available in the coming months.

The update is running according to Slack to reorganize the existing functionalities of the software. When opening the application, users will now be taken to a Home page that closely resembles the current screen layout, although all workspaces will now come together here. According to the company, switching between workspaces has always been a cumbersome process.

A new sidebar has also been created in which users can open tabs with, for example, all DMs or an activity feed in which all mentions and activities in subscribed threads appear one below the other. This sidebar replaces the current bar with all shortcuts to channels and DMs. The shortcuts for channels can now be found under the Home page, while DMs can of course be opened under the button of the same name.

Separate buttons have also been created for viewing all messages that have been marked as ‘save for later’ and for creating things, for example creating a new message, channel or video call. Previously, there was a separate button for each of those functions. After the update, all those functions will be placed under one common button with a drop-down menu. Finally, Slack gives the Huddle a more prominent place, because the video calling function gets its own button at the top of every conversations page.

Slack says that as of this writing, new teams can access the updated interface, which is being rolled out incrementally. Existing teams will receive an update with the new interface within the coming months.
