A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES has gone under the hammer for 660,000 dollars, converted 561,000 euros. The amount is a record for video games. The game is not only still in its plastic casing, but inside the box itself is also in good condition.

According to IGN, this amount shatters all older records. At the beginning of last year, for example, $ 360,000 was paid for the ‘Nintendo Play Station’, a hybrid console from the time when the two parties worked together. The record for a video game was $156,000; that was paid last year for a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3.

The box of the game comes from the fourth printing that Nintendo did. The older the pressure, the more money the game ultimately makes at auction. Characteristic of this print is that the Game Pak NES-GP code was still missing, but that the trademark symbol was already present. Nintendo itself does not provide any information about these different versions of the game, so you have to find out for yourself based on these kinds of details.

Chris Kohler of game preservation studio Digital Eclipse tells IGN that the game was probably paid so much because the people who played the game as children are now 40 to 50 years old and have the money to spend on it. It is also expected that the game will only increase in value.
