Scythe has released a new version of its Katana processor cooler. The fifth iteration has an asymmetrical design and is slightly lower than its predecessor at 135mm. The cooler comes with a new Kaze Flex 92mm-pwm fan.

According to Scythe, the new 92mm fan is quieter and has a longer lifespan, while the air displacement has remained the same compared to the predecessor. The fan runs at a speed between 300 and 2300rpm and that speed is regulated via the pwm connection. Rubber spacers should limit vibrations.

Scythe equips the Katana 5 with the second generation of its Easy Clip Mounting System. The mounting system comes with accessories for all common sockets from AMD and Intel. The cooler is mounted in the box with a pushpin clip for Intel systems. To install the cooler on an AMD processor, users can use another clip provided.

Due to the asymmetrical design, the cooler should be easier to place in small systems, because there is room for memory bars under the cooling block. The cooler is 7mm lower than the Katana 4 version, which has been on sale since 2012. Several online stores have already included the Katana 5 in their range, for prices from around 26 euros.
