Samsung has made a dram Lpddr5x module for the first time. It has a speed of approximately 8.5 Gbit/s. The dram has also been validated to use with Snapdragon socs. Details about this are not yet known.
The South Korean manufacturer say that it has reached a maximum speed of 8.5Gbit/s on its existing Lpddr5x dram modules. They previously achieved a maximum speed of 7.5 Gbit/s. Samsung says it was able to improve that speed by optimizing signal transfer between the application processor and memory. The maximum speed on the previous generation dram, on Lpddr5, is 6.4Gbit/s. With the speed, Samsung meets the official Jedec standard; it prescribes a maximum speed for Lpddr5x memory of 8533Mbit/s. It is not the first time that a company has achieved such speed in dram. Micron did that work earlier this year.
Samsung writes that the new memory has been validated for the first time for use in Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm. The company does not provide any further information about this; so it is not known in which hardware the dram should first appear. Samsung writes that the new speeds also make Lpddr memory suitable for applications other than smartphones, for example for data center applications and cars.
