Samsung has presented two new smartwatches prior to the Mobile World Congress telecom fair. The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo should go on sale from April and will run on Tizen instead of Android like the first Gear.

Apart from the fact that the smartwatches run on Tizen, there are relatively few changes compared to the first Gear. The screen is still a 1.63 “amoled display with a resolution of 320×320 pixels. The soc has had an update: instead of a single-core 800MHz processor, there is a 1GHz dualcore.

Samsung also claims that the battery life is better; the manufacturer claims around 2-3 days on a battery charge, where that is about a day with the previous Gear. The Gear 2 has a 2-megapixel camera, the Gear 2 Neo has no camera. The Neo is also made of plastic, while the regular Gear 2 is made of metal. Both smartwatches have a physical button below the screen, something the Galaxy Gear does not have.

Like the previous version, the Gears are only compatible with Samsung’s own devices, such as the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4. Devices from other manufacturers cannot be used.
