Samsung Display has revealed more details about the folding glass used in the Galaxy Z Flip smartphone. The layer is 30 micrometers thick and the material is also made available to other manufacturers.

According to Samsung Display, a ‘special material’ is injected during the production of the glass to achieve a consistent hardness. The manufacturer does not say which material that is. The thickness is the only specification the company discloses. Samsung Display gives the glass the brand name Ultra Thin Glass with the subtitle ‘Tough, yet Tender’.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the first device to use the foldable glass. Samsung Display has mass-produced the material and is also making it available to other manufacturers who want to release foldable devices.

The company says it has collaborated on the glass with another Korean company since 2013. It is probably Dowoo Insys, a company in which Samsung has had a majority share, according to Korean media, since the end of last year.

According to Samsung Display, the French certification agency Bureau Veritas has tested the durability of the glass by folding it more than 200,000 times. Reviews and experiences of users with the Galaxy z Flip show that the thin glass is provided with an extra protective layer of plastic. That layer has a much lower hardness than glass on screens of regular smartphones and is therefore sensitive to scratches.
