Rumor: Samsung Galaxy Watch will run Tizen

Samsung will drop the Gear name for smartwatches and refer to future watches as Galaxy Watch. That is what SamMobile claims. Despite the fact that Samsung has so far only used the Galaxy brand name for Android devices, the watch will run Tizen.

The Galaxy Watch, which should appear later this year, will run on Tizen 4.0 when released, according to SamMobile. That’s a newer version than what’s on watches now. The previous watch in the Galaxy line is the 2013 Galaxy Gear with a proprietary operating system. Furthermore, Samsung has only used the Galaxy brand name for Android devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

There were also rumors that the next Samsung watch would run on Google Wear OS, the former Android Wear. According to SamMobile, that is incorrect. The Galaxy Watch would include digital assistant Bixby on board, something that current smartwatches from the South Korean manufacturer do not have.

The next logical moment for an announcement of the watch would be next month, when Samsung will most likely announce the Galaxy Note 9 in New York. In addition to the Note 9, Samsung would also like to show its first smart speaker there, claims business newspaper The Wall Street Journal.
