The Galaxy S5 will be dust and waterproof according to a new rumor. Until now, only Sony waterproofs its most expensive devices. Samsung would like to use it as a feature for its smartphone, which the company will present next week.

ZDNet does not mention how Samsung makes its device waterproof. In recent years, Samsung has been associated with companies that can apply a nano-coating to components, so that the covers that Sony uses on its Xperia Z1 Compact, among others, would not be necessary. It is unknown whether that technology is ready for mass production yet.

The current Galaxy S4 is not waterproof, but with the Galaxy S4 Active there is a variant that is resistant to water and dust. Compared to the regular model, Samsung has exchanged the AMOLED screen for an LCD and used a different camera module.

Samsung will most likely present its Galaxy S5 next Monday during a press conference at the telecom fair Mobile World Congress. The device would have a fingerprint scanner in the Home button, have a 5.25 “screen with 2560 x 1440 pixels and run on a Samsung Exynos 6 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 soc.

In addition to the Galaxy S5, there are also rumors about a successor to the Galaxy Gear. That new smartwatch would not run on Android but on Samsung’s own mobile operating system Tizen, the American newspaper USA Today writes. Whether users notice anything is unknown.
