Developer Quantic Dream, known for Detroit: Become Human, is rumored to be working on a Star Wars game in collaboration with Disney. The game has been in development for eighteen months. The studio has long worked with Sony, but has been independent since 2020.
French YouTuber Gautoz, a former game journalist, was the first to reveal that Quantic Dream is reportedly working with Disney. Tom Henderson writes on DualShockers that he spoke to a source who knows more about that; who claims that the studio has been working on a Star Wars game for Disney for about eighteen months. Substantive details about the game are unknown.
Quantic Dream has been an independent studio since last year. The French developer said it plans to self-publish games in order to preserve its freedom and independence. If the studio is working on a Star Wars game, the company will have a deal for it with Disney, which owns the rights. There will also probably be collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.
At the beginning of this year, Disney revived the Lucasfilm Games name to create new Star Wars games in collaboration with other studios. This is possible due to the expiration of a ten-year deal between Electronics Art and Disney. Until 2023, EA has the exclusive right to release Star Wars games.
Several Star Wars games have already been announced this year that are placed with publishers other than EA. Ubisoft is working on a Star Wars open world game. That game is made by Massive Entertainment, the studio behind Tom Clancy’s The Division. Aspyr Media is working on a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Sony is also involved; the game is being made for the PC and as a limited time console exclusive on the PlayStation 5.
Quantic Dream was founded in 1997 and has gained prominence over the past decade thanks to a partnership with Sony with games such as 2010’s Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls from 2013, and Detroit: Become Human from 2018. The studio was financed by Sony for 12 years and released during that period, games are exclusively out for PlayStation consoles. In 2019, that exclusivity came to an end and the studio’s recent games also appeared for the PC.
