Rumor: Next PSVR will have eye tracking and higher resolution

The next version of Sony’s PlayStation VR would have a higher resolution than its predecessor, feature eye tracking and foveated rendering, and would require a single USB-C cable, a new rumor has it.

The resolution according to UploadVR is 4000×2040 pixels in total, or in other words 2000×2040 pixels per eye. The previous PSVR for the PS4 has 1920×1080 pixels, 960×1080 pixels per eye. The most popular VR headset right now, the Oculus Quest 2, has 3664×1920 pixels. A higher resolution should reduce the screen door effect, where users see the pixels during use.

To use those pixels, Sony uses eye tracking and foveated rendering, where the part users look at is sharper than the rest. This prevents the VR headset from having to focus on the entire image and therefore saves on computing power.

The headset also has a vibration motor for giving haptic feedback, UploadVR claims. Sony previously announced that the controllers can also provide haptic feedback. According to UploadVR, the single cable Sony talked about in the limited info on the headset is a USB-C cable that plugs into the port on the front of the PS5’s chassis.

Sony already said in February that there is still a lot of work to be done in getting the new PSVR ready for release. That is why it would only come out after 2021. The PS5 itself came out last fall and is still poorly available.
