According to a new rumor, Sony provides the next PlayStation VR headset with an OLED screen from Samsung. The VR glasses should appear at the end of 2022 around the holiday season.

According to Bloomberg sources, Sony has opted for OLED screens from Samsung. The site writes that in an article on Japan Display; that manufacturer will focus on making LCDs for VR glasses. Sony and Samsung have not commented on the rumor.

The first PSVR headset also has an OLED screen and VR glasses like the original HTC Vive and the first Oculus Quest had that too. With new models, those manufacturers have switched to LCDs with a much higher resolution, making the screen door effect much less visible.

It is not yet clear what resolution the OLED panel will get in the new PSVR headset. With the first version of those glasses, that is 960×1080 pixels per eye. The Oculus Quest 2 has an LCD with a resolution of 1832×1920 pixels per eye.

According to previous rumors , the new PSVR headset will have a total resolution of 4000×2040 pixels, or 2000×2040 pixels per eye. The glasses would also have eye tracking, which can be used for foveated rendering , among other things . There was no mention of the screen technology used before.

Sony would like to release the new PSVR headset around the holidays next year. That would mean that the VR headset will not appear before November 2022. Sony announced at the beginning of this year that a new PSVR headset for the PlayStation 5 is in development, which must be connected to the console with a cable. Sony has not yet shown the new headset, but has already shown the completely new controllers with adaptive triggers .
