Rumor: New Intel processors for thin laptops are delayed

Rumor has it that new Intel processors for thin laptops will hit the market later than expected. That would mean that laptop manufacturers will also have to release their planned models later. Acer and Asus, among others, have shown laptops with ‘unknown’ CPUs.

According to Digitimes sources, laptop makers worldwide are suffering from the slowdown at Intel. It would be manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus. Those brands plan to release thin laptops with new processors in the second half of this year, but the Intel CPUs chosen for them are said to have slowed down.

The third quarter is usually a period in which many laptops are sold. In the Benelux, for example, many ‘back-to-school’ promotions are held. Due to the delay at Intel, the new laptops could not be released until later. Laptop manufacturers would therefore have adjusted their expectations for deliveries.

Acer and Asus have already shown thin laptops this year that contain a still unknown Intel processor. For example, Acer introduced a 15.6 “version of its very light Swift 5 laptop at the end of May. The Taiwanese manufacturer has not yet announced which Intel CPU will be in it, presumably because it is a copy that has not yet been announced. Acer plans to release the laptop in the fall, but hasn’t mentioned a specific date or month yet.

Asus introduced the ZenBook Pro UX480 at the Computex trade show in May. That 14 “laptop will get an Intel processor, of which the manufacturer could not yet give the type number. It is probably also one of the new Intel CPUs that has been delayed according to the rumor.

Presumably it concerns the Intel Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake processors, of which Intel revealed the existence during the Computex. Intel said at the time that 140 laptops with the new processors will appear from the fall. The new CPUs are still made at 14nm and, like the current Kaby Lake Refresh processors, are classified under the eighth generation of Core processors.
