The first B550 motherboards for AMD CPUs are rumored to hit the market on June 16. AMD plans to unveil the chipset on May 21. The B550 chipset would support PCI-e 4.0 and native USB 3.1 Gen 2.

B550 motherboards have been expected for a long time as a successor to the B450 chipset, but have not yet been announced. That should change on May 21, according to Wccftech sources, who claim AMD will unveil the chipset on that date. Just under four weeks later, on June 16, the first B550 motherboards should appear on the market.

Rumors have been circulating for some time about motherboards with the B550 chipset. For example, some details about the alleged chipset appeared in March. B550 motherboards must support PCI-e 4.0, among other things, where current B450 motherboards only support PCI-e 3.0. Incidentally, the B550 chipset does not contain any PCI-e 4.0 lanes, according to the rumors. To take advantage of the newer PCI-e standard, users must install a Ryzen 3000 CPU, as those processors do include PCI-E 4.0 lanes. Furthermore, support for USB 3.1 gen 2 will probably be integrated into the chipset as standard.

According to Digitimes, AMD will unveil the next generation of Ryzen CPUs for desktops in September. At the same time, the company should come up with the 600 series chipsets. The B550 motherboards are also expected to be compatible with Ryzen 4000 processors.
