LG would be planning to use an OLED screen for the next high-quality smartphone, the V30. That is what the English-language South Korean newspaper The Korea Herald claims on the basis of its own sources. The device would be on the market in September.

According to the newspaper, not only the V30 comes with an OLED screen. The G7, LG’s next flagship and the successor to the current G6, would also receive an OLED screen at the introduction in 2018. According to a source, most of the screens LG Display produces in the second half of this year will be used for LG smartphones, first for the V30.

LG Display, a subsidiary of LG, will ramp up production to make this possible. Production of OLED circuits for mobile phones will start in July. According to a source, it will take some time before LG Display is able to achieve a comparable production level as Samsung Display. Problems surrounding patents and the production chain must first be resolved. LG Display is known for producing the OLED panels for the televisions of LG, Sony, Philips and Panasonic.

Part of the production of OLED screens for the mobile market will be provided to Chinese smartphone makers, according to a source. Probably that will be Xiaomi in any case. This company equipped the Mi Note 2 with an OLED screen from LG last year and wants to provide the successor again this year with a display from the LG factories.

In April, there was already a rumor that LG would announce a smartphone with a curved screen later this year. This is probably the V30, the likely successor to the LG V20. The bend would be the same as in Samsung devices such as the S7 Edge and Galaxy S8. The last smartphone with its own OLED screen is the G Flex 2, which appeared on the market two years ago.

Samsung uses OLED screens in seventy percent of its smartphones. More than 95 percent of all mobile devices with an OLED screen get the screen of Samsung Display.
