Rumor: Core i7-7740K and i5-7640K are Kaby Lake-X processors for lga2066

The French Canard PC says it has an engineering sample of the Core i5-7640K in its possession. According to the hardware magazine, it is a Kaby Lake-X processor, for the new lga2066 socket. The processor probably doesn’t have hyperthreading.

Canard PC does not show a picture of the processor. There is no matching motherboard yet. On Monday, the French wrote on their website about the processor, which will probably come on the market together with the Intel Core i7-7760K. In the original report, the magazine didn’t mention a socket, so it appeared to be lga1151 processors, just like the current i7-7700K. Intel is set to unveil the Kaby Lake-X processor family in August, along with X299 motherboards with the lga2066 socket.

Because Canard PC does not have an X299 motherboard, the magazine cannot test the chip. It is therefore not yet certain whether the i5-7640K has hyperthreading. The French have now sent the 7640K to a contact who can “tell us more about the chip.” However, Canard PC now says it has internal information from Intel that indicates that the i5 does not have hyperthreading. Despite this, the French are holding out.

The tdp of the processors, in addition to the i5-7640K, the magazine also received info about the i7-7740K, would be 112 watts and both processors support dual channel DDR4-2400 memory. The Skylake-X processors with six, eight and ten cores, which also appear for lga2066, can handle quad channel memory. Benchlife also publishes new details; the website reports that the processors do not have an integrated GPU.

There is a little more clarity about the clock speeds. For example, the i7-7740K would be able to run all cores at 4.5GHz in turbo mode. The i5-7640K has a turbo speed of 4.2GHz with a single core active and 4.1GHz with two cores active. With all four cores, the turbo would come out at 4GHz, which is equal to the processor’s presumed baseclock. While the clock speeds are barely faster than the i7-7700K and the i5-7600K, the Kaby Lake-X processors may have better overclocking results.
