Real-life Metal Gear Solid game opens in Japan

Crawling around in a cardboard box like Solid Snake to outwit your enemies unseen? That is of course possible in the Metal Gear Solid games, but from next week also in real life, in a Japanese entertainment hall.

The so-called real stealth game Metal Gear Solid can be played from September 12 until the end of this year in the Tokyo Mystery Circus. Candidates can take on the mission alone or in a team of up to three people. The goal is to penetrate a military complex. Just like in the games, players are equipped with a vest and a so-called codec, which contains the details of the mission. Players must stay out of sight of the guards, who are also real people.

When the guards spot a player, they open fire. No live ammunition is used, but participants lose playing time if they are hit. When the time runs out, the mission can no longer be completed, or you have to pay extra to continue playing. Just like in the virtual Metal Gear Solid games, in the real game, players can use cardboard boxes to move around undetected. Other well-known elements, such as the exclamation mark, would also be discussed in the entertainment hall.

Going through the game takes about 15 to 45 minutes and an entrance ticket costs 3800 yen. Converted that is about 29 euros. There are also combination tickets for two and three people at a discount. Players who are not very good at sneaking and who have been hit too much can buy ten minutes of extra playing time for 800 yen, or about 6 euros.
