‘Police action not aimed at Tor and anonymization’

According to Tor project director Shave Nerad, the seizure of several Tor servers reported yesterday is not intended to harm the network itself. The so-called ‘exit node’ servers, intended to establish a connection from the anonymous Tor network to the rest of the internet, are said to have been taken by the German police. because of a campaign around child pornography. These servers were not taken off the shelves because of their anonymizing effect, but because of their IP address. This address is said to have been used for child pornography-related matters. If the Tor servers were actually used to access them, then it seems that these computers have done a great job of making and keeping their users anonymous. Not the IP address of the actual visitor but of the exit node was left behind on the server with illegal material.

Presumably, the police had no idea that the Tor servers contained no log files at all. The administrators of the Tor servers have therefore not received any charges. Nerad is therefore betting on a good outcome and hopes that the servers will be returned as soon as possible. In addition, the organization is currently actively coming out with context data to put the raid into perspective. The raid itself was originally not mentioned by the organization behind Tor. Because of the erroneous image that arose, that is silence now broken.
