PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has overtaken Valves Dota 2 when it comes to player counts on Steam. The game recently reached over 870,000 players on the platform, making it number one now. The popularity of the title has been increasing for a long time.

The official Twitter account behind the game made announced the news recently based on statistics from Steam itself. This shows that the game has 877,844 concurrent players, while Dota 2 has to make do with 842,919. These figures are the peak number of players on Steam. For a long time, Dota 2 was the most popular title on the platform, but it was gradually overtaken by PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG.

For example, at the end of July, the game was the most played non-Valve title. It couldn’t compete with Dota 2 at the time, because the total number of players came down to almost half a million. More than 300,000 players have been added in two months. Although it is still an ‘Early Access’ version of the game, the online shooter is very popular. The so-called battle royale game hit Steam in March and has since sold more than eight million copies.

In June, developer Bluehole said he wants to get out of Early Access status within six months. The release should then take place at the end of this year. During Gamescom it appeared that Microsoft will be the publisher of the title on the Xbox, which according to the makers is an ‘exclusive’. Bluehole declined to say whether there will be any releases on other consoles in the future. It would be too early for that now.
