Facebook will stop selling the Oculus Rift S headset for PCs in the spring of 2021. From then on, Facebook will only focus on the Quest headsets, which can also be connected to a PC. There will be no new Rift headsets in the future.

The Oculus Rift S is the latest headset from the company that only works with PCs. Facebook is going to focus entirely on Quests headsets that also work standalone. The current Oculus Quest and the new Quest 2 can also be connected to a PC with a USB cable, but images will then be streamed to the VR headset with compression.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Facebook confirms that no new Oculus Rift headsets are coming. Facebook states that headsets are no longer made that only work in combination with a PC and that the company is focusing on the Quest because it offers ‘the best of both worlds’.

Facebook announced the Oculus Quest 2 headset on Wednesday. With a price from 349 euros, it is cheaper than its predecessor and has a number of improvements, such as a higher resolution, but there are also disadvantages. Ars Technica has published a review of the headset and states that the new mounting strap is inconvenient, because it has to be reset every time. Furthermore, the ipd can only be set with three positions, which could be much more accurate with the first Quest. The controllers would also be less accurate.

There is also a lot of criticism that a Facebook account is required to use the new headset. Users must use their real name for such an account, and Facebook can shut down users and temporarily or permanently deny access to their Oculus games if they don’t adhere to it. A German regulator calls the obligation ‘legally extremely dubious’ and possibly illegal.
