Nvidia takes a stand in patent case against Samsung and Qualcomm over GPU technology

The US International Trade Commission has upheld a ruling that Samsung and Qualcomm do not infringe Nvidia’s patents. Nvidia is considering an appeal because the company believes that Samsung and Qualcomm are using its GPU technology.

The USITC committee has decided not to re-examine Nvidia’s original indictment, upholding a previous decision, Reuters said. According to the earlier decision of the administrative court, Samsung did not infringe on two of the claimed patents, and further ruled that a third patent is invalid because it is not a new invention compared to previously existing patents. The Trade Commission therefore agrees. Nvidia has indicated that it is considering appealing the decision.

Nvidia had filed the lawsuit because it finds Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s Exynos processors infringing on its technology related to graphics chips. With the lawsuit, Nvidia wanted to ensure that Samsung and Qualcomm products that use the technology, such as parts of the Galaxy series, can no longer be imported to America.

Samsung and Nvidia have been at odds with each other over patents for a few years now. Nvidia eventually filed the complaints about the infringement of its patents with the courts. Samsung has done the same in response. The results of the lawsuit that Samsung has filed are expected December 22, according to Bloomberg.
