Nintendo delivered 21 million Switch consoles and 169 million games last year

Nintendo shipped 24 percent more Switch consoles in its last financial year than a year earlier. More than 6 million copies of the Switch Lite have been delivered. The number of games delivered increased by 42 percent to 169 million.

The figures cover the period from April 2019 to March 2020. Nintendo released the Switch Lite in September last year and reports that 6.19 million units have now been delivered. Over the year, 14.84 million regular Switch consoles were also shipped. This brings the total for the entire financial year to 21.03 million copies.

Nintendo is also announcing new details about game deliveries. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the most successful Switch game to date. In the first six weeks after release, 13.4 million copies of the game were sold. No other Switch game has sold so much in a comparable period. The game was released on March 20, and between the release date and the close of the fiscal year on March 31, 11.77 million copies have been shipped.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have already shipped 17.74 million copies. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which came out in 2017, continues to be popular. In the past financial year, 8 million units were delivered, bringing the total number of units delivered to almost 25 million. The number of games delivered grew considerably compared to last year. This concerns 168.72 million copies, which is an increase of 42.3 percent compared to a year earlier.

Due to the corona crisis, there were delays in deliveries of consoles and accessories in some regions, but according to Nintendo, the impact on the financial numbers is minimal. Nintendo is getting more and more revenue from digital software sales, that share is now 34 percent, last year it was 24.8 percent.

Nintendo achieved annual sales of 1308.5 billion yen, which is 9 percent more than a year earlier. Net profit was 258.6 billion yen, an increase of 33.3 percent. Converted, this is a profit of 2.25 billion euros.
