Nikon Z9 system camera can take a thousand raw photos at 20 fps and costs 5999 euros
Nikon announces its Z9 camera. This system camera will receive a 45.7-megapixel sensor and an improved buffer, making it possible to take up to 1000 raw photos in a single burst. That goes at 20 frames per second. The Z9 costs 5999 euros.
Nikon equips the Z9 with a stacked full-frame sensor with a resolution of 45.7 megapixels and an Expeed 7 processor, in combination with a fully electronic shutter. According to Nikon, this allows the sensor to be read faster, allowing burst photography at 30fps for jpeg images, or 20fps when taking raw photos. According to Nikon, a maximum of 1000 raw photos fit in the buffer.
If users lower the resolution to 11 megapixels, the maximum frame rate according to Nikon is a maximum of 120 images per second for jpeg images. The Z9 further supports shutter speeds of up to 1/32,000 seconds and has an ISO range of 64 to 25,600, although this can be expanded to the equivalent of 32 to 102,400. The sensor should also show less rolling shutter.
The sensor also has a new autofocus system with 493 points, which, according to the manufacturer, uses AI algorithms and 3D tracking. With that, the autofocus system can now track people’s eyes, faces and bodies, in addition to animals and vehicles. The camera should automatically recognize the subject and adjust the autofocus system accordingly.
The Z9 can record videos at 8k resolution. Initially, this goes with frame rates up to 30 fps. The Z9 also supports 4k video recording at up to 120 frames per second. The camera can record videos at 10bit with the H.264 and H.265 video codecs. Nikon also talks about support for raw video at 8k and the Z9 can also record videos with ProRes 422 HQ. In 2022, Nikon plans to add 8k60 support with 12bit via a firmware update, via a proprietary N-RAW file format or ProRes RAW HQ.
The electronic viewfinder has an OLED screen with 3.69 million pixels and a refresh rate of 60Hz. The back of the camera has a tilting LCD. The Nikon Z9 has two CFexpress Type B slots for memory cards. According to the manufacturer, the EN-EL18d battery used will last up to 740 photos with the LCD or 700 photos when the electronic viewfinder is turned on.
Nikon already announced the Z9 in March, but did not announce all details about the device before. The company will release its new top model in December for a suggested retail price of EUR 5999 for the body alone.
The NIKKOR Z 100-400mm zoom for 2999 euros
Nikon is also introducing a new zoom lens for its Z-series full-frame cameras. The lense that has a range of 100 to 400mm and a variable aperture between f/4.5 and f/5.6. The integrated image stabilization of the lens should be good for 5.5 stops, Nikon claims. The company also mentions a focus distance of 0.75m at 100mm and 0.98m at 400mm. The lens has a suggested retail price of 2999 euros.
The company is also coming out with a new FTZ II mount adapter, which allows AI and later F lenses to be used with Nikon Z cameras. Nikon already offered an FTZ adapter, but the new variant is said to offer ‘improved usability’ through a ‘streamlined design’. The adapter costs 289 euros.
