The fifth version of the benchmark software Geekbench was released on Tuesday. The update adds tests that use machine learning computation and the Vulkan API. Geekbench 5 is available for Windows, macOS, Linux and iOS. An Android version will follow later this week.

Geekbench 5 introduces, among other things, cpu and gpu benchmarks with support for new techniques. For example, the new CPU benchmarks use computations for machine learning, augmented reality and computational photography to test CPU performance. In addition, support for Vulkan has been added to the GPU benchmark. Vulkan is an open source API used to control the GPU. Vulkan benchmarks are only available on Windows, Linux and Android.

Furthermore, Geekbench adds 5 capabilities for multi-threaded benchmarks. Threads can now work collaboratively on a single issue, where previously they could only work independently on different tasks. Geekbench 5 will also use more RAM during the tests to better measure the influence of memory on CPU performance.

Primate Labs, the developer of Geekbench, is also introducing a dark mode for macOS. A dark mode for users of iOS 13 will follow later this year. Geekbench 5 also only has a 64-bit version. This will eliminate 32-bit support.
