Panasonic is reportedly releasing a new series of 3D glasses at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The new 3D glasses would be the first to support the m-3di specification, a standard for 3D glasses from Panasonic and XpanD, among others.
The new 3D glasses line from Panasonic consists according to Flatpanelshd from the models with the type numbers TY-EW3D3LW, TY-EW3D3MW and TY-EW3D3SW, the former being the largest size and the latter the smallest for children. The three models will be available in three colorways. The largest model weighs only 27 grams, making it one gram lighter than the 3D glasses that Samsung first showed at the beginning of this year at CES and 11 grams lighter than the second generation of 3D glasses from Panasonic.
Panasonic has equipped its third-generation 3D glasses with a rechargeable battery with fast charging function. Two minutes of charging time is therefore sufficient for three hours of 3D playback, while the battery needs to be charged for 30 minutes for the full duration of 25 hours. The TV’s USB port can be used for charging. According to Panasonic, the glasses are also thinner than with the previous generation and allow more light to pass through, not unimportant with plasma TVs, which often have more trouble than LCD TVs with the light output in 3d.
The glasses are the first to support m-3di, a standard for active 3D glasses. Panasonic and XpanD are the initiators of this standard, but so far few major TV manufacturers have registered for the m-3di port. Hitachi, Mitsubishi, ViewSonic and the Chinese Changhong, among others, have supported the standard, which was established in March this year.
Panasonic will officially present the new lightweight shutter glasses at IFA. The suggested retail price of the new models is not yet known.
