Motorola is working on a … walkie talkie

It sounds a bit old-fashioned, but it could well save lives. The walkie talkie from Motorola. The telephone company is doing well this year with its Moto One, but the “Solutions” branch of the company is looking for something completely different. That is looking for communication that is a bit more robust: walkie talkies, with which care providers can stay in contact if, for example, no telephone traffic is possible.

They are certainly not simple walkie talkies, these are high-tech devices that can save lives. In America it is often the case in the hurricane season that one or more states are hit by a major hurricane, which means that telephone poles are hit and there is no mobile network. The moment that this is lost, the walkie talkies can then be used. These work via a different infrastructure, which means that care providers can still keep in touch at a distance of kilometers. Consider, for example, applications for forest fires or earthquakes.

These land mobile radios, such as walkie talkies are also called, are also often used by police officers and the fire brigade. Motorole Solutions (that of smartphones is called Motorola Mobility) is already big in land mobile radios, but has now developed one that is very advanced. The APX Next has a thick antenna and large buttons, so that you can easily handle it. It also has a touchscreen and a voice recognition system that works even if you walk at a funfair.

Request license plates is more, because thanks to artificial intelligence, the device can handle 95 standard queries from care providers, such as requesting a driver’s license or a license plate. He does this without a human being needing it. Certainly if you have a stressful job where you end up in life-threatening or other hugely stressful situations, it can save you a lot of time.

The walkie talkie works with a radio chip for on land and a 4G / LTE chip for when the mobile network tower is still in good order. They can work together, but it is also possible to use them separately. Although there is a voice assistant built into the walkie talkie, it is not necessarily necessary to shout out loud in the device to activate it. For this purpose buttons have been added to the system, so that you can use the device in a safe way.

It is also not the case that the assistant will tell aloud that license plate 44-AAA-44 belongs to Mr. ABC who lives at Block AA in XYZ City. The device gives a beep when it has found what you are looking for and then you can choose when you press the button to hear the results. If you prefer to read them, you can: the walkie talkie has a screen. Good to see that the device contributes to safety in several ways: not only that of the people being helped, but also the caregivers themselves. What the APX Next costs is still unknown.

Telephone and walkie talkie often come close together. Apple, for example, had a walkie-talkie function on the iPhone, but it has recently been postponed.
