Migration costs hold Linux back

Companies are not switching en masse to Linux or Open-Source products for desktop use because the migration costs from Windows are too high. This is according to a study by Gartner. Only one percent of companies would use Linux on their workstations. This share will grow to 3.8 percent in 2008. For many companies, the benefits of migrating to Linux simply do not outweigh the costs. Government agencies do switch to Linux or Open-Source more easily. The switch is more attractive to them because the government deals differently with the return on investment.
