Microsoft warns Windows 10 users about end of support April 2018 Update

Anyone using an old version of Windows 10 will now receive a warning that this operating system will soon no longer be supported. Users of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which will be closed in November, are the first to receive the notification.

It is the first time that Microsoft has sent out a notification about the end of support for a Windows 10 version. The message was discovered by a Windows Latest employee who was still running Windows 10 version 1803, better known as the April 2018 Update, on one of his systems. Non-business users of that operating system will no longer receive updates or security patches from November 2019.

To still receive updates and security patches, these users have no choice but to update the system to a more recent Windows 10 version. Microsoft will notify the affected users via the Windows Update function of the operating system. The notification is subtle; users do not need to click on anything or take immediate action. It is not even imaginary that some users may overlook the warning.

Not every computer is eligible for the update to Windows 10 version 1903, the most recent release from May 2019, or its predecessor version 1809, the so-called October 2018 Update. On older systems, incompatible drivers or other software may block the update. In such a case, the Windows Update function does not tell you why the later version is not available. To find out, the user must install Microsoft’s Windows 10 Update assistant.
