Microsoft says it is working on an Android 11 upgrade for the Surface Duo and says it wants to distribute this update before the end of the year. The company is not yet sharing details about the update. Android 11 has support for devices with multiple screens as standard.

Microsoft confirms to The Verge that it is still working on updates for the original Surface Duo and that it wants to distribute the upgrade this year. According to an earlier message from the German website DR Windows, that Android 11 upgrade was previously planned for this summer. It is unclear whether this information was incorrect or whether Microsoft needed more time for the update.

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced the Surface Duo 2. This smartphone is intended for the business market and will receive Android 11 upon introduction. It goes without saying that the original Surface will get the software improvements of the Duo 2 with the Android 11 upgrade. For example, the Surface Duo 2 is set to right-handed use by default, with the right screen as the primary screen. Microsoft previously indicated that it wants to provide the Surface Duo with updates for three years.
