Microsoft will enable gaming in Dolby Vision starting Tuesday for owners of the Xbox Series X and S and compatible TVs. According to Microsoft, about a hundred games have already been optimized and many will follow.

More than a hundred ‘next-gen titles’ are now or soon available in Dolby Vision, Microsoft writes. Until now, HDR games use the HDR10 standard. An advantage of Dolby Vision is the support for dynamic metadata, which could provide a more convincing HDR effect. Games need to be optimized to take full advantage of that. Developers can do that in the game itself, or via the Xbox SDKs.

Thousands of games that now use HDR10 or Auto HDR also benefit from support for Dolby Vision, according to Microsoft. Microsoft says it has partnered with Dolby to make visual improvements to games that still use the older HDR standards. That’s about automatic improvements and not about actual changes to games.

Dolby Vision does not work in 120Hz mode on all TVs, Microsoft and Dolby say they are working with TV manufacturers to make that possible via firmware updates. LG already released firmware updates for its OLED TVs from 2020 and 2021.

Dolby Vision is only available for gaming on Xbox Series consoles for now. It is not yet known whether the HDR standard will also come to the PlayStation 5 games. An earlier message about two years of exclusivity for Xbox consoles was withdrawn by Microsoft. That would be based on an error. Microsoft emphasizes that the Xbox is the first console to use Dolby Vision for games.
