Microsoft has started to distribute the Windows 10 October 2020 Update. It is one of the two annual major Windows updates, although major new features remain. Users do get the new Edge browser and a new start menu.

Microsoft writes that it has started releasing the fall update. The update will be released in phases, more users will receive the new version in the coming weeks. Via a status page, Microsoft keeps track of the process and provides updates about the rollout. If there are any problems with the update, they will be announced there.

The Windows 10 October 2020 Update includes Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser, which has been available since the beginning of this year. Users who have not yet installed this browser will receive it with the autumn update.

Microsoft is also renewing the start menu. The tiles no longer have a background color. The icons of apps must therefore be more visible. Microsoft also changes the operation of the alt + tab key combination. In the new Windows 10 version, alt + tab shows all open tabs in Edge as separate items. It is also possible to switch back to the classic view, without displaying each tab.

For users who have already installed the May 2020 Update, the October 2020 Update installation will go smoothly, Microsoft says. The update should be similar to a monthly update for those users.

The October 2020 Update is the second autumn update for Windows 10 in a row that adds little new functionality to the operating system. The same was the case with the Windows 10 November 2019 Update last year. The May 2020 Update that appeared at the end of May brought more changes.
