Microsoft has acquired Clipchamp, a developer that makes video editing software that can be used as a web app in browsers. An acquisition amount has not been mentioned. Microsoft says it wants to improve the Clipchamp service after the acquisition.

Clipchamp is a free video editing tool that can be used in browsers and is aimed at non-professional users. For example, the software can be used for users who want to edit a video and post it on social media. Users can use filters and templates, cut videos and add other clips, or add texts to videos. The web app uses the PC’s GPU for image processing.

Microsoft says it sees video as a new form of “documents” that are becoming easier for users to create themselves and has acquired Clipchamp to improve and grow the software. The company hints at further integrations within Windows and Microsoft 365. Clipchamp was founded in 2013 and had 17 million registered users in July.
