Micron is expanding its series of Crucial MX500 SATA SSDs with a 4TB variant. It is a 2.5″ SSD with a height of 7mm. Like the other MX500 versions, the 4TB SSD has a Silicon Motion controller and TLC Nand memory.
Crucial MX500 4TB via ComputerBase
On paper, the specifications of the 4TB version of the Crucial MX500 are the same as those of the already available variants with capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, ComputerBase writes. The German site has a copy and notes that the ssd has a dram cache of 512MB. That is relatively low for a 4TB SSD, but tests will have to show to what extent that affects the performance.
Micron provides the 4TB SSD with an SM2259 controller, according to a ComputerBase teardown. In the first versions of the MX500, which came out in 2018, the manufacturer still used the SM2258, which is also on the specification list. At the time, Micron said the SM2259 offered few benefits to consumers.
The 1TB and 2TB versions of the Crucial MX500 SATA SSD are in the Pricewatch at the time of writing for about 95 and 195 euros respectively. The 4TB variant will probably be offered for less than 400 euros. That makes it one of the cheapest 4TB SSDs. Currently, only Samsung’s 870 QVO with qlc-nand is significantly cheaper.
