MediaTek has announced a new technology for fast charging of smartphones under the name Pump Express 3.0. This should make it possible to charge an empty device to a level of seventy percent within twenty minutes.
The technology makes fast charging of phones via USB-C possible by charging the battery directly, without using charging circuits, MediaTek states. For example, there is a direct connection from the charger to the battery. In this way, the company wants to prevent overheating, which often occurs in the charging circuits. In addition, there are various safety systems that should also prevent the charger itself from overheating. The technology is a successor to Pump Express 2.0, which is found in devices from Sony and Lenovo, for example. MediaTek does not provide additional information about the precise operation of the technology.
The technology should be available in the third quarter of this year and will be integrated into the Helio P20 soc. MediaTek indicates that it can also add the latest version of Pump Express to a soc at the request of customers. The Taiwanese company is not alone in developing fast charging techniques. Qualcomm, for example, has QuickCharge 3.0, with which a device with a 2750mAh battery can be charged to 80 percent in 35 minutes. Oppo offers similar possibilities with charging based on Super VOOC Flash Charge.
