macOS Mojave appears tonight: you should know this

Spread the love

From this evening macOS Mojave is available! That is something to look forward to, because the Mac operating system (macOS 10.14) is the biggest software update for years. But what do you need to know about Mojave and what should you consider when you download the update? We’ll put it straight for you.

macOS Mojave download

We expect the software to appear in the Mac App Store at 7:00 PM. Here macOS Mojave is listed on the ‘Featured’ tab. We can imagine that you want to install the update right away, but keep in mind that it can be busy on Apple’s servers, which will take a bit longer.

Which Macs support it?

To run macOS Mojave can run, you need a Mac from 2012 or newer – with a few exceptions. These are the Macs you can upgrade:

  • MacBook (early 2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (mid 2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (mid 2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac (end 2012 or newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (late 2013, plus models from mid 2010 and mid 2012, with a graphics card that supports Metal)

you really do not know what kind of Mac you have or what year it comes from? You can find it like this:

  1. Click on the apple in the top left corner and choose ‘About this Mac’.
  2. On the tab ‘Overview’ you can see which Mac you have.

New macOS Mojave functions

As mentioned Mac OS Mojave has been the biggest Mac update for years. The operating system enriches your Mac with a lot of cool features, such as the dark mode, Stacks, Continuity camera and extensive possibilities for taking screenshots. In the article Release macOS Mojave is approaching: 8 functions to look forward to have listed the biggest innovations.

Back up with Time Machine

No matter how good Apple is best to make the installation of macOS Mojave as reliable as possible – with a big update something can always go wrong. We therefore recommend that you back up beforehand. With Time Machine that’s a piece of cake:

  1. Connect an external hard drive to your Mac, preferably one that has twice as much storage as your Mac and that you do not use anywhere else.
  2. Go to “System Preferences” > Time Machine ‘and select the hard disk you just connected via’ Select backup disk ‘. Confirm with ‘Use disk’
  3. Time Machine makes a backup of your entire hard disk. Keep in mind that this can take just a few hours.

If you want you can also give your Mac a clean installation right away. You can read how to do this in our iTip Startup disk macOS Mojave .
