macOS Big Sur is out now – this is new!

Spread the love

Apple released macOS Big Sur tonight! You can now download the new operating system for Mac for free. You won’t remember your Mac after installing macOS Big Sur: new features, a completely new look … it’s without a doubt the biggest update in years!

Long wait

During WWDC in June, Apple already gave us a sneak preview of the new operating system. “Available this fall,” it was said at the time. Typically, macOS updates of this caliber appear in September. This year our patience was put to the test. During the Mac event last Tuesday, it became clear that the macOS Big Sur release would take place tonight. And now you can update your Mac!

macOS Big Sur new features

macOS Big Sur 11.0 is the successor to macOS Catalina 10.16: goodbye macOS 10, welcome macOS 11. After twenty years, Apple thinks it is time for a new version number for the Mac operating system. That alone indicates how big this year’s update is. But what’s new then?

No icon remains unchanged, no window looks the same. How about a Control Center that gives you just as quick access to frequently used functions as on the iPhone and iPad. Or a new Messages app that is finally no longer inferior to WhatsApp and colleagues in terms of possibilities. Or the improved standard apps such as Mail and Photos with practical new functions. And finally Safari, which has received the biggest improvements of all apps.

Below you will find tips to get started with the best new functions. Keep an eye on this website for more tips in the near future.

Download macOS Big Sur

macOS Big Sur is free to download. The update can be found under “System Preferences> Software Update”. Click “Update Now” here and go through the steps to download and install the update. You can also download the update from the App Store.

Keep in mind that it can be particularly busy on Apple’s servers for the first few hours, so it takes a long time to bring in Big Sur. It may even be that the update is not yet available with you. Then try again later.
