LG is launching a Smart Cam for its webOS televisions. This 1080p camera can be used for video calling in addition to other activities, such as fitness classes. The camera is available in the United States for $100. A worldwide release will follow later.

The LG Smart Cam VC23GA has according to the manufacturer a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, two built-in microphones, an integrated privacy shutter to cover the camera and a ‘multiview function’, with which the camera feed can be shown on top of other television content. The camera is compatible with webOS 22 and 23, and allows users, among other things, to make video calls on their LG television with LG’s own RemoteMeeting service. LG does not mention support for other video calling services.

There will also be support for, among other things, Exercite, a fitness service. The camera allows the service to provide feedback on users’ movements. The same applies to Flexit, a fitness service that allows users to receive 1-on-1 coaching. There will also be support for a selfie app, a digital fun mirror and a 1M HomeDance app, which allows users to take dance lessons for K-Pop songs.

The LG Smart Cam is currently available in the United States and South Korea. The device costs $100 in the US. LG says the camera will be released worldwide later, but does not say when exactly that will happen.
