LG has placed a large modular screen in a Taiwanese cinema that consists entirely of LEDs and therefore does not require a projector. It is the first time LG places an LED screen in a cinema and enters this market. Samsung has been doing that for a long time.

The LG Led Cinema screen is 14 meters wide and 7 meters high, and is placed in a Taiwanese cinema room of the Showtime Cinemas chain. The screen is accompanied by the Dolby Integrated Media Server IMS3000, which supports, among other things, Dolby Atmos. The hall has space for 300 seats.

The 623″ screen can display images with a resolution of up to 4096×2160 pixels and, like OLED TVs, has the characteristic that each pixel can be controlled individually and emits light itself, so that no projection is needed and an impressive black display can be achieved The configuration consists of 176 modules of 900x640x124mm, each module consists of 6 submodules. Each module has a total of 51,840 pixels and has a resolution of 192×270 pixels. The pixel pitch is 3.3mm.

One of the 176 modules that make up the entire screen.

LG’s screen can achieve higher brightness than 48cd/m², which is the dci standard for SDR films that are not specifically optimized for LED screens. The contrast ratio is at least 4000:1. Projection contrast ratio is usually 2500:1. According to LG, traditional projectors last about 30,000 hours, while its LED screen is said to have a lifespan of 100,000 hours.

Compared to the traditional cinema experience through projection, an LED screen like this one from LG can provide much higher contrast, higher brightness and a convincing HDR experience. Samsung has been active in this market for some time and has already installed various Onyx LED screens in cinemas in various European countries, for example. These screens achieve a brightness of 500cd/m², which is usually limited to 300cd/m² in the cinema. That is a lot higher than the brightness of 48cd/m² that is normal for projection, although that is 106cd/m² with Dolby Cinema.
