Korean media: Samsung may make VR glasses for Facebook
At a meeting of the Facebook and Samsung summit in South Korea, it was discussed that the two companies will work closely together in the field of virtual reality. That writes the Korea Times. Samsung may produce the hardware and Facebook the content.
Samsung may make the VR glasses based on the designs that Facebook provides and the social network will be responsible for the software and content, the Korea Times writes based on conversations with Samsung employees. This would expand an existing deal: Samsung’s Gear VR has already been developed in collaboration with Facebook’s subsidiary Oculus. Those VR glasses work with a Galaxy Note 4 as a base. Oculus plans to release its Rift glasses to consumers on a limited scale in 2015. It is not known which party makes those glasses.
The Korean media pays a lot of attention to the visit of the Facebook top, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, to the headquarters of Samsung. The Korea Herald speculates that the development of a new ‘Facebook phone’ would have been discussed, but that rumor seems to have little solid foundation. Zuckerberg and Samsung vice chairman Lee Jae-yong are said to have met in the US earlier this year and also had a meeting in Korea last year.
