Intel will appoint a new CEO effective February 15. It’s about Patrick ‘Pat’ Gelsinger. He is currently the CEO of VMware, but has worked at Intel for thirty years as a technical chief. Gelsinger was previously the architect of the 80486 processor at Intel.

The board of directors has appointed Pat Gelsinger as CEO, Intel writes. The 59-year-old Gelsinger has forty years of experience and comes from VMware, where he has been CEO since 2012. He already worked at Intel from 1979 to 2009, including as CTO. He is also the architect of the 80486 processor from 1989. With the appointment of Gelsinger, Intel has again a CEO with a technical background.

According to Intel, the appointment is independent of the financial performance in 2020. Intel states that the coming quarterly figures will be higher than expected. Intel also says that progress has been made with the 7nm process. The company will tell more about this on January 21 during the discussion of the quarterly figures.

In a personal message, Gelsinger writes that he is delighted to be returning to Intel, where he started his career at the age of 18. Gelsinger says Intel has an exciting future ahead of it as it transforms from a “cpu company to a multi-architecture xpu company.”

In June 2018, Brian Krzanich stepped down as Intel CEO, due to a relationship with an employee. Bob Swan, who was the financial director at the time, was then appointed as interim CEO. Swan was definitively appointed CEO in January 2019, but he will be succeeded soon. Swan will remain in his role until February 15. It is not yet known what he will do next. Swan says he fully supports the appointment of the new CEO.
