Intel has announced that tablets based on Bay Trail series SOCs will be launched in the second quarter of this year. It is still unclear which manufacturers will come up with such a device.

According to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, Bay Trial for Android tablets will launch in the second quarter, but specific details were not mentioned. Krzanich does point out that it is possible to run the Android OS on 64bit with the chips. Such tablets should also have a battery life of more than ten hours, although Intel does not provide details about which battery capacity belongs to it.

The announcement confirms previous rumors about the Bay Trail socs for Android. To compete with ARM-based chips, Intel would have cut prices in half. For the time being, no tablets with Android have been released, while several Bay Trail models with Windows 8.1 have already been announced.

It is still unclear which manufacturers will come with an Android tablet based on Bay Trail. It is also not yet known which chips they will use for this: Intel has released both dual-core and quad-core SOCs in the Bay Trail series. It is likely that it concerns the cheaper dual cores.

Intel made $2.6 billion in profit in the quarter. Despite this, the company announced that it will lay off 5,000 people worldwide. That probably has to do with the shrinking PC market.
