Infineon will close its central development department in Munich, Germany. The company wants to spread research and development across different departments so that it can take place “closer to the product”. The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung first reported the news, Infineon later confirmed the plans. The company emphasized that there would be no layoffs during this reorganization. The one hundred and twenty employees of the development department therefore do not have to fear for their jobs.

However, a number of employees will be transferred to Dresden in Germany or Villach in Austria. Infineon also plans to sell its chip factory near Munich. The Munich-Neuperlach plant is not only used for the production of 150mm wafers, but also for high-frequency products made using the SiGe process. This limits the number of possible buyers; However, Infineon does not want to disclose who it is negotiating with.
