IKEA and Sonos have announced a new Symfonisk WiFi speaker. The new model is a painting that can be hung on the wall or placed on a flat surface. The speaker also gets interchangeable panels.

The IKEA Symfonisk painting speaker consists of two speakers, a woofer and a tweeter, with a special waveguide placed in front of that tweeter to better spread the highs. The speaker can be connected via WiFi to a smartphone, which can control the speaker with the Sonos S2 app. The speaker can work alone, or together with other Sonos or Symfonisk speakers. Stereo pairing is only possible with another Symfonisk painting speaker. IKEA supplies a 3.5 meter long power cable and the other painting speaker can be supplied with power via daisy chaining. The speakers can also be used as surround speakers for Sonos ARC. On the back of the speaker there are two volume buttons and a pause button.

The painting appears in the colors black or white and can be placed both horizontally and vertically. After introduction, twelve extra interchangeable plates are to come, so that buyers can choose a different work of art. For example, it is a vinyl record, paint splatters, a photo of a city or a deer.

The painting speaker is 57x41x6cm in size and hangs 6cm away from the wall. IKEA previously wrote on a webpage that has since been taken offline that the speaker would receive Apple Airplay 2 support. IKEA confirmed this in a livestream; previous Symfonisk speakers also had this support. There is no Bluetooth support, The Symfonisk painting speaker costs 179 euros and is for sale from 15 July. In addition, customers receive one painting panel. Additional panels are for sale from 1 September and cost 15 to 30 euros. IKEA says it wants to release more speakers together with Sonos.
