According to Nikkei sources, the Chinese Huawei will launch an 8k television this year with a module to use 5g. Huawei has not yet officially announced or confirmed the release of such a television.

Nikkei says it is relying on sources familiar with Huawei’s plans. It is not clear when the television should be released and nothing else is known about specifications or why a 5G modem is specifically integrated. The newspaper speculates that the support for 5G allows users to not have to use Ethernet cables or set-top boxes with the TV. In addition, the TV could serve as a kind of router for other devices. Huawei would come with this TV because the company, in fact following Samsung, wants to achieve a complete consumer electronics ecosystem that includes wearables, PCs, smartphones and televisions.

If this 8k television is actually released, it will be a product with technologies that are far from being widely used everywhere. Even though some more 8k TVs are slowly coming onto the market, there is hardly any native content available for 8k TVs outside of Japan. The Tokyo Olympics in 2020 may well change that, as Japanese broadcaster NHK will record this event in 8k. In addition, 5G is already available in South Korea and parts of the United States, but in other regions it will only happen in the coming years.

Huawei is not entirely an outsider on the TV market, by the way, since its own chip division Hisilicon Technologies, for example, is a more important supplier of chips for televisions. This part also makes 5g modems. In the field of 5g and the necessary equipment, Huawei is in any case a party with a good position in the market and with the necessary knowledge.
