HTC announces to focus on cheaper smartphones

HTC has indicated in the presentation of its quarterly figures that from now on it will focus more on cheaper smartphones. That should lead to the company selling more phones again. Things have not been going well for the Taiwanese manufacturer for a long time.

HTC CEO Cher Wang told Reuters that her company should focus more on the middle segment of the smartphone market. HTC would have focused too much on the flagship models, which ultimately did not pay off. Wang states that HTC will release more smartphones with a price between about 110 and 220 euros, but the company will not focus on the cheapest models. More specific plans were not disclosed.

In the past quarter, HTC again recorded disappointing business results. Sales fell again and turnover amounted to just over a billion euros. That did lead to a small profit, while HTC still made a loss in previous quarters.

It is not the first time that HTC has spoken out about making cheaper smartphones. The company reported the same a year ago, also when it presented disappointing quarterly figures. Despite this, HTC continued to focus mainly on the One, which previously showed that the high-end device did not sell well enough to avoid a loss of millions.

If the rumors are correct, HTC will come this year with a high-end successor to the One; a device known under the code name M8. A cheaper model with a smaller screen and a slower processor would also come out. For the time being, this is known under the code name M8 Mini.
